Why not just write porn? Right?

“Why not just write porn.” she asked in what I’m sure was supposed to be an attempt at derision. But it was a very sensible suggestion. Come on, tell me that headline and this pic didn’t make you just a little curious.

Recently joining the ranks of Indie Authors out there, perhaps for the very reason of avoiding, aloof publishing houses and acrid abusive editors. I’ve been faced with the additional tasks of self promotion and advertising to drive the sales of my first book. I jumped in wholeheartedly in the writing, and the designing and even found an experienced author to proof read for me, but the promotion part is so totally overwhelming.

I was not, however, prepared for the vast and complex world of selling myself as a product to others. Being quite the little introvert did not help. I did however find groups and forums that help in this respect of my personality development and the other night, I got a lesson that well…I think I need in order to garner any kind of success. What was the lesson?

Negativity comes, sometimes deserved or not, it comes. Sometimes in the form of blazing belligerent glory. It cannot be avoided, it serves little purpose to retaliate, and it can sometimes be very constructive. You see in the construction of disdainful commentary I found a seed I could use.

I really hadn’t thought when I posted that I was attempting to do anything other than share and entice conversation on yet another interesting topic in my life. Yes, I have used blog posts as promotion tools for my book, but I kinda like the think, maybe naively, that sometimes people just want to read what I have to say. But it seems to have been interpreted as such and the person thought there were probably better ways people like me could promote themselves.

She said, “Why not just write porn?” Among other things, but being me and being dismissive of overly raucous people, I only found that one part of the comment interesting. I was driven to do a little research. We all know that sex sells, but how much does it sell in comparison to other things?

Apparently Erotica is a billion dollar industry. And one or two people actually suggest that it might be a way to break into writing, a strategic entry point to introducing myself to the reading world. I know it’s something I can do, having written my fair share of erotic poetry and having it quite well received. So maybe it’s an avenue to explore. Just maybe.

Could this be a real and effective way of getting a foot in the door of the writing/reading world?

  1. There IS a huge market out there for it. My daughter-in-law OD’d on the stuff. She and my son are no longer married. Porn is as much a problem for women as men, contrary to what some would have you believe. It’s just packaged a little different. (Just my opinion, btw.)

But I saw first hand how destructive even soft porn can be in a relationship when books like Wicked Loving Lies first came out in 1976. My folks had a pretty good marriage. They were fairly happy until my mom started reading those books one right after another. There was just no way my poor dad could measure up. Though they stayed together, their relationship after that definitely was never the same.

I came to the conclusion that a lot of women are naive enough to believe those guys on the covers with no shirt and tight pants who can read their minds and drive their passion really exist. And every other REAL man pales in comparison. After watching mom, I never went near the stuff. Been married 43 years and haven’t missed it.

    1. I guess it can be an addiction like anything else, and we may think it’s harmless because we are not physically acting out the acts in question. But as a writer I really am looking at it. I’ve had short stories and such with a sexual element, but never completely dedicated to sexual content, but is it as a writer an avenue worth exploring?

On the other hand, there are experiences like yours that give me pause.
